Balanitis is the inflammation of the head of the penis (glans), often caused by poor hygiene, infection, or skin conditions. Most cases respond to topical treatment; recurrent cases may need circumcision for permanent relief.
Redness and swelling of the glans · Itching or pain · Foul-smelling discharge · Difficulty retracting the foreskin · Discomfort during urination or sex
Clinical examination, swab for fungal/bacterial culture, blood sugar to rule out diabetes (a common predisposing factor).
Topical antifungal/antibiotic creams for acute episodes. Improved hygiene and blood sugar control. For recurrent balanitis, circumcision provides a permanent cure.
