An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, most commonly in a fallopian tube. It is a medical emergency — left untreated, it can rupture and cause life-threatening internal bleeding.
Severe one-sided pelvic pain · Vaginal bleeding (lighter or different from a normal period) · Shoulder tip pain · Dizziness, fainting · Nausea
Confirmed by serial beta-hCG measurements showing slow rise, and a transvaginal ultrasound that shows no intrauterine sac. Diagnosed within hours of presentation.
If detected early and unruptured, methotrexate injection. If ruptured or larger, laparoscopic salpingostomy (preserves tube) or salpingectomy (removes tube). Hospital stay 1–2 days.
Doctor consult, hospital admission, insurance paperwork, surgery, post-op follow-up — your care manager handles everything.
