ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy) is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused shock waves to break kidney stones into small fragments that pass naturally with urine. Best for stones smaller than 2cm in the upper urinary tract.
Diagnosed kidney stone <2cm · Severe renal colic · Repeated stone formation · Failed medical expulsive therapy
Ultrasound and non-contrast CT KUB to confirm size, location, and density of stone. Urine culture to rule out active infection.
Performed under sedation in 45–60 minutes. Patient lies on a soft cushion while shock waves are delivered through the skin. No incisions. Most patients go home the same day; stone fragments pass over 1–2 weeks.
