Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often due to high eye pressure. Known as the "silent thief of sight," it causes irreversible vision loss if untreated. Eye drops, laser, or surgery can preserve sight.
Often asymptomatic in early stages · Gradual loss of side vision (peripheral) · Halos around lights · Eye pain (acute angle closure) · Headache · Tunnel vision in advanced disease
Tonometry (IOP measurement), gonioscopy, OCT of optic nerve, visual field testing (perimetry), pachymetry. Annual screening recommended for everyone over 40.
Eye drops as first line. Laser trabeculoplasty or iridotomy for resistant cases. Filtering surgery (trabeculectomy) or MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery) for advanced disease.
