Mastoidectomy is the surgical removal of infected mastoid bone cells behind the ear. It is needed when chronic ear infections (cholesteatoma) damage the mastoid bone or threaten complications like meningitis.
Persistent ear discharge · Hearing loss · Severe pain behind the ear · Headache and dizziness · Foul-smelling ear discharge · Facial weakness in advanced cases
Otoscopic examination shows cholesteatoma, audiometry assesses hearing loss, CT temporal bone shows extent of disease.
Cortical or modified radical mastoidectomy under general anesthesia in 2–3 hours. Combined with tympanoplasty if needed. Hospital stay 1–2 days, recovery 2–3 weeks.
