Paraphimosis is a urological emergency where a retracted foreskin gets trapped behind the head of the penis and cannot be returned to its normal position, causing painful swelling. Immediate medical attention is required.
Severe pain in the head of the penis · Swollen, dark-colored glans · Inability to pull the foreskin back over · Constricting band of foreskin · Difficulty urinating
Diagnosed by physical examination — typically obvious on inspection.
Manual reduction under local anesthesia after applying ice or osmotic agents to reduce swelling. If unsuccessful, dorsal slit is performed. Definitive treatment is circumcision once acute episode resolves.
