PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy) is the gold-standard surgery for large kidney stones (>2cm) and staghorn calculi. A single keyhole tract through the back accesses the kidney to fragment and extract stones in one go.
Large kidney stones >2cm · Staghorn or branched stones · Stones not responding to ESWL or RIRS · Stones with infection
Non-contrast CT KUB to plan the access tract, urine and blood tests, renal function tests.
Performed under general anesthesia. A 1cm tract is created in the back to reach the kidney. Stones are fragmented with laser or ultrasound and extracted. 2–3 hour procedure, 4–5 day hospital stay.
